Oceans of Possibilities
Kia & Patrick return with new episodes to entertain and stir up excitement for this year's Summer Reading Program, Oceans of Possibilities. Tune in throughout the summer to hear enchanting sea-faring yarns and keep up to date on what's happening at the library.
Episode Four: This week, Kia shares her knowledge of legendary sea creatures, and Patrick tells a Norwegian tale that explains how the sea became salty. Minor spoiler: it involves two feuding brothers, the Devil, and a fair bit of magic.
Episode Three: Kia tells two stories, one of which claims to be the "true" story of a mermaid-caused flood, and Patrick shares a tale about a self-absorbed princess and a sea serpent.
Episode Two: Patrick tells an Irish story about a fisherman, his son, and a trickster, and Kia introduces us to some of her favorite sea deities.
Episode One: First up, Patrick goes OG on the Little Mermaid, and Kia spins a not-so-traditional tale of true love, girl power, and pirate murder. They also take a moment to respectfully expound upon the work of Charles Dickens.
Tales and Tails: LoreLibrarians
Patrick and Kia decide to tell each other tales about tails. The only requirements: the stories must be open domain, about animals with tails, and preferably less well known then that chick Goldilocks and her ursine antagonists.
1. Tails and Tales: LoreLibrarians
In this episode, you'll hear The Enchanted Snake as recorded by Giambattista Basile in the Pentamerone, and the myth of Namazu, the Japanese Earthquake Fish.

6. Librarian Historians: The Flood of 1958
Sources: The Atchison Globe microfilm archive in the Kansas Room contains extensive coverage of the 1958 flood. There is also a file labeled "Disasters," which has an abundance of information on the 1958 flood and other natural disasters. This mostly contains clippings from the Globe, but also features items like The LFM Headlight Vol. XII, No. 12, August 8, 1958. This employee newsletter has a lot of great pictures of the devastation and stories from LFM workers who were on duty at the foundry when the flood hit. We've also included a pdf of several clippings from the Globe for your perusal online.

5. Librarian Historians: The Spanish Flu in Atchison
How did Atchison react to a pandemic that hit right at the end of a World War? Patrick and Kia go through the story of the Spanish Influenza using the Atchison Globe records from 1918, and show how our community has gone through hard times before.
The Atchison Public Library and a few other libraries joined up with the National World War I Museum and Memorial to host "We've Been Here Before," a virtual presentation and Q&A about the 1918 Pandemic and it's effect on our country. The event will begin 7:00 on February 10, and you can pre-register and submit questions at the link below.
|
Sources: Each month contains all headlines and stories about the Spanish Influenza from the Atchison Globe. Not included: any announcement of illness or death due to influenza that wasn't a headline or was important to the community as a whole, and some repeat ads for flu-fighting medicines.

4. Librarian Historians: Oscar "Heavy" Johnson
Patrick indulges in his passion for baseball and tells you all about Oscar "Heavy" Johnson, a National Negro League hall-of-famer who was born and raised here in Atchison. Don't miss him shaming Kia's baseball knowledge with the quiz at the end!
