Kansas Room Policy

The Kansas Room houses a substantial collection of local history, genealogical materials, obituaries, school yearbooks and other items that have relevance to the Atchison community, and to Kansas in general. Materials in the Kansas Room are available to library users to consult in-house, and do not circulate outside of the library. For specialized research assistance, please consult with the Kansas Room Librarian.

Contingent upon availability, the Kansas Room can be reserved for quiet study, historical research, exam proctoring and small-group meetings. The room can be reserved in 1-hour increments, which can be renewed pending availability.  Please see a library staff member to sign-in at the Circulation Desk. Order of priority for use of the Kansas Room is as follows:

  • Atchison Public Library-sponsored events, activities or programs.
  • Groups/individuals that are using library materials or promoting library events. (Examples of these may include Friends of the Library, Genealogical Society, Library Board of Directors or Passport Agent Training.)
  • Groups/individuals engaged in educational, cultural, intellectual or service-oriented activities (such as exam proctoring, book discussions or tutoring).
  • Federal or State Social Service agencies or related entities.

The library reserves the right to deny use to any eligible group/individual if their request would result in the undue interference with regular library operations, or if said group/individual is not in compliance with established library policies.  Note also that the Kansas Room cannot be used for the benefit of commercial concerns.  Exceptions may be made for a commercial entity at the discretion of the Library Board of Directors.
