Ever wondered how aquaponics combines hydroponics and aquaculture to grow fish and plants at the same time? Ever wish the library had pet mascots that you could help name? Come to this year's Teen Engineering Event to assemble and start our own aquaponics system which will be on display in the Teen Scene. We will learn about different aspects of water movement and sustainable farming. Those who come to the event will get a vote on what breed of fish to add, and name them! Teens going into 6th grade in the fall or above are welcome at this event, and it is FREE!
Car crashes are the NUMBER ONE cause of death among teens, and a few race car drivers and police officers are trying to prevent that from happening! The amazing B.R.A.K.E.S. program is coming to the Kansas City area in October. It combines lessons and fun, allowing teens 15-20 who have a permit or license to get hands-on practice on a track with a trainer. Each teen gets to practice five different collision prevention techniques. The sign-up fee can be refunded after the lesson if paid by check, and some insurance companies may give you a discount if you turn in your lesson certificate. Check out their website at putonthebrakes.org/home or stop by the library's Teen Scene to pick up a brochure. Safe driving!
The first teen-specific event this summer is Movie Day, which is free and you don't have to sign up. Make sure you register for the Summer Reading Program to win cool prizes though! Sign up sheets are at the circulation desk or at our Kick-Off Party Saturday, June 2nd. You can begin turning in weekly reading slips June 4th. See you at the programs!
The people have spoken, and the Teen Scene has been named! Make sure you come in and check the calendar for Teen activities, choose a book from the display, or post your favorite book to give our summer readers suggestions! A prize winner will be chosen at random from the completed favorite book slips at the end of the month.
