Dear Friends and Patrons,
There will be no curbside pickup services tomorrow, Wednesday, March 18. Don't worry though, we're not abandoning you. Instead, our staff will be taking the day to celebrate the life of our late friend and co-worker, Betty Sue Thomas. Curbside pickup will return on Thursday from 10:00 am - 6:00 pm.

Tuesday's Update

Are you feeling blue due to the lack of story time too?
Since Mr. Patrick can't read to you, the Online Resources page of our website is constantly being updated with live storytimes from celebrities, other libraries, aquariums, and more.
You'll also find links for all ages to activities, educational games, virtual tours, livestreaming concerts, and ways to get free books, movies, comics, and magazines.
Curbside Pickup is officially up and running!
A note to those placing holds online: Our courier service will be ceasing service soon and we will no longer receive items from other libraries. Any search you do on our catalog should be limited to our library. If you need to see how to limit your search, click on the Curbside Pickup button on our website.
Don't forget to pick up some board games or one of the new puzzles while you are at it! Nothing keeps you busy like a picture of the ocean broken into 1000 pieces!
And as always, feel free to message us on Facebook or call us at 913-367-1902 with any questions.

The Atchison Public Schools is offering pick up breakfast and lunch, so that children not attending school can still eat. Their current schedule is posted on their Facebook page here
The goal is to get the kids food without them gathering anywhere to eat. Pick up times are between 11:00 AM- 1:00 PM at four different locations (including the Elementary school and Middle school parking lots).

Remembering a wonderful librarian

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to long time librarian Betty Sue Thomas. She passed away last Thursday and the library world lost a great advocate. She managed the Large Print collection, Home-bound Services, worked the desk, set a high standard fornthe dress code, and kept the rest of us in line.
She always found ways to better serve the community; by negotiating better deals with vendors, recruiting volunteers, and making everyone welcome. Other libraries sought her advice on creating their own Home-bound programs. When contemplating a policy shift or some other change, it was with cautious trepidation that I would ask "What do you think, Betty Sue?" She always answered honestly, and the library is a better place for her insight.
One of my last memories of Betty Sue is her taking a grade schooler on a tour of the children's library. She was asking him what he liked to read and explaining he could always ask a librarian to help him find more. She never stopped recruiting library users.

Curbside Pickup and More...

3/16/2020

We recently made the decision to close the library. As of now, this closure will last through at least March 21st. We did this to keep our patrons and ourselves safe and to help slow the effects of the national health crisis.
HOWEVER!
We are not stopping our services completely! We will begin Curbside Delivery tomorrow, March 17. Tue, Wed, and Fri it will be available from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Thursdays will be from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and Saturday from 10:00 PM to 12:00 PM.
Click on the "Curbside Pickup" button to the right for specific instructions on how to use this new service.

Drop off your returns (including DVDs and games) in the drop box at any time, 24/7. Returns will be quarantined for a certain amount of time before being put back into circulation. WE DON’T CHARGE LATE FEES ANYWAY so don’t worry about items being late.
Remember, we have board games and now PUZZLES to check out as well. Since these are not available to put on hold on the catalog, call us to see what’s available and request them.
We will be updating our website with links to our online resources as well as free online activities, games, and more to help keep you and/or your children busy.

If you do not have one, the STATE LIBRARY CARD can get you more free online resources as well. Call us and we can set you up a card over the phone so you can take advantage of RB Digital and cloudLibrary.
Lastly, we will provide links to reputable websites with information on the COVID-19 situation on our website. Please stay safe, take social distancing seriously, and we hope to see you again very soon.

Library Response to COVID-19

3/13/2020

Dear friends,
We want to let you know our current plans and response regarding the COVID-19 virus.
As always, we consider the safety and health of our patrons and staff. We will continue serving our patrons’ library needs, while also planning for changing circumstances.
We want to assure you that we work hard to keep our building as clean as possible, including cleaning and sanitizing public spaces and surfaces. We regularly clean and sanitize the computer keyboards, counters, and the toys in the Children’s area. Due to the difficulty of keeping up with the cleaning of the children's toys, we decided to remove them for now. We offer multiple hand sanitizing stations throughout the library for use by staff and patrons.
Due to the recommendation for social distancing, we made the difficult decision to cancel or postpone all library programs through the end of March.
We will rely on the expertise of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for direction about further actions. If these precautions are recommended, we will consider:
1. Limiting open hours and services
2. Closing to the public until the threat is over
We encourage everyone to learn about how COVID-19 spreads and what you can do to protect yourself and others. Seek verifiable information from trusted sources, like the above mentioned agencies.
And remember, that through the Atchison Library’s eLibrary, you have access to a large collection of digital media including books, audiobooks, magazines, and movies without ever leaving home. Please call us at 367-1902 if you need help with these services.

Additionally, the toys in the children's section will be unavailable for that time.
Reservations for the Meeting Room have not been cancelled, but it will be disinfected after each use.
Please watch for further posts about how we are supporting the drive to slow the spread of illnesses.
