Due to the weather, the library will be closed on Monday the 26th. The Library Board Meeting scheduled for 7pm has been rescheduled for Monday, December 3rd.
Stay safe and warm! 'Tis the season once again for our annual Breakfast with Santa extravaganza! And this year is going to be the hap-hap-happiest Christmas since Bing Crosby tap-danced with Danny Kaye! Join us on Saturday, December 15th, starting at 9:00 am. We'll have food and drink for the whole family, followed by a visit from everyone's favorite omniscient benefactor (and winner of the 1987 North Pole Beard Contest), Santa Claus! The kids can tell him what they want for Christmas and take pictures, and then we'll cap everything off with a mind-blowing show by magician and funnyman, Eric Vaughn! This program is FREE and open to everyone. See you there! Ho, ho, ho!
The library will be closing at 5pm on Wednesday the 21st. We will be closed on Thursday the 22nd and Friday the 23rd. The library will reopen for normal hours on Saturday at 9.
This session's theme is Before the Civil War. The first book for discussion is The All-True Travel and Adventures of Lidie Newton by Jane Smiley. The discussion leader will be Dennis Etzel of Washburn University. The Talk will take place on Dec 6th at 6:00. Copies of the book are available at the Circulation desk for checkout. Come join in the talk and learn of Kansas and it's influence on and by the Civil War. Hope to see you there.
Ever wondered about the meals the pioneers ate as the crossed the country? Join the Atchison County Genealogy Society at 5:30 on Nov. 6th as they welcome Atchison’s own Darlene Mason-Taylor. Her presentation will cover what cooking along the trail involved. She is bringing actual items used to cook!

The Profile in Courage Essay Contest for High School Students gives cash prizes up to $10,000 for an essay profiling a person who put the nation's interests above their own. For something more local, the Kansas Voices contest for writers living in Kansas is giving away over $1,000 in prizes. Submit original poetry or prose to the Youth division and you could win $100! Visit www.winfieldarts.org/kansas-voices-writing-contest to submit online or for more info. Deadline is March 8, 2019. Information on both contests is hanging in the Teen Scene. Use Homework Help hours to ask for editing assistance! Join us on Nov. 15th at 6:00 for Thanksgiving Sides. Bring the side of your choice, enough for 10 or so, THE RECIPE, and your own table service. Have fun sharing ideas for Thanksgiving and good conversation.
