Kansas Legal Services Tax Help

Kansas Legal Services affiliates with a Legal Services program in California to make electronic filing (e-filing) of taxes available to low income people, without having to buy software or pay a provider.  The program asks simple questions and prepares tax forms.  Electronic filing can allow people to get their tax refund back in as little as 10 days.  In addition, this program emphasizes the family’s eligibility for Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), an important financial support for low income, working families.  Families of 5, with total income up to $49,000 can qualify for some EITC credit, either to help pay taxes due or to increase their refund. This program is helpful to families with earned income under $50,000, who don’t have anyone in the military. It does not work for families where the workers don’t have Social Security numbers or who have employment outside the US.

Through January 25, 20 Kansas families have used these forms to obtain Federal tax refunds of over $45,000, including $18,664 in EITC.  This is money they were due from the government.  This program allowed them to get their money FOR FREE.  Plus, the program is available in English and Spanish.  These Kansas families are part of 9,032 families who have already used this program this year. A New Look for the Children’s Library

The painting in the Children’s Library is 99% complete with only a few details left to be finished. Just so you’ll know, it really looks great; come see for yourself. Holly is holding off story time until Thursday, January 19th to help you avoid some of the mess (you can still come look at books and check them out.) She has lots of great stories and fun crafts to fill those dreary winter days ahead. By the way, these are two of the new colors you’ll see downstairs (the yellow doesn’t show up very well on the computer screen so you’ll need to come see that color in person.)

The Parasol Puppets will add a holiday twist to a classic tale at Atchison Public Library when they give a FREE performance of the festive handpuppet show, THE GINGERBREAD MAN’S CHRISTMAS. This delightful puppet show will be performed on Saturday, December 17th when we celebrate the Christmas holiday with “Breakfast With Santa” from 10:00 a.m. to noon.

When Mrs. Claus bakes a special cookie for Santa, the Gingerbread Man decides that he doesn’t want to get eaten! He hops off of the cookie sheet and begins his sing-a-long adventure. Of course, Santa will be on hand to offer other stories, plus fun crafts and other activities. This special event is free, but space is limited and you’ll need a ticket to attend. You can get your FREE ticket at the circulation desk. Contact Holly Hutchinson, Youth Services Librarian, at 913-367-1902 for more information.
