This week’s Book TALK: The All-True Travels and Adventures of Lidie Newton by Jane Smiley
This week’s Talk About Literature in Kansas: Before the Civil War features a historical novel with a very appealing heroine. At age 20, Lidie Harkness of Illinois meets and marries Bostonian abolitionist Thomas Newton, who is enroute to Lawrence, K.T. (Kansas Territory), with a wagon full of Sharps rifles. The new marriage drops Lidie right in the middle of turmoil between pro-slavery Border Ruffians from Missouri and Kansas Free Staters. Tuesday’s book discussion is led by Susan Rieke, Professor of English at University of Saint Mary. Please join us at 2 pm on Tuesday, March 30, for the final program in our TALK series.
